My highlight of Xlendi was unexpected. We had planned to do the walk from the lighthouse to the Sanap Cliffs, a comfortable hike I found online with a map and all we needed to know attached. However, the cliffs in the other direction looked enticing, and Ollie found a review saying that although it is a lesser known hike, it was still doable! The only instruction we had was to follow the little red dots on the ground, and to ignore the ‘private property’ signs along the way as apparently they are a false and illegal manoeuvre to discourage tourists. This was extremely daunting, but the hike is worth it. Starting at the stairs near the Blu Water Boutique Hotel in Xlendi, instead of going up and around the stairs to Caroline Cave we turned right and walked along the rocks until we found a hidden staircase ascending up the cliff. This is arguably the hardest part of the hike, it is very steep and narrow. Once atop the cliff the view of Xlendi Bay is unmatched, and the path along the cliffs lay ahead of us – the hardest part was definitely over. What came next was about 2.5 hours of a coastal walk, hugging the cliff side and looking for the red dots on the ground to keep us going. The cliffs were stunning, and we walked past Fungus Rock, Dwerja Bay and ended at The Blue Hole, a small swimming hole in Dwerja with beautiful blue waters. In Dwerja there is also the Inland Sea, which operates many boat and diver tours around the island. We were extremely grateful that Dwerja is a popular tourist destination, as there were food and drink vans which were desperately needed after our walk. You can of course get to Dwerja by bus, Uber or car, if walking isn’t for you. My main recommendation for this walk – and any hike for that matter – is to be prepared with food, plenty of water, suitable footwear (ideally not Birkenstocks), and a small first aid kit.
